Armand Pierre Fernandez Arman (Nice, November 17, 1928 – October 22, 2005). As a small child Armand is surrounded by the antiques in his father’s shop which leave a lasting impression on him.A bright student, he starts painting at the age of ten and will be placed in a school of fine arts in Nice in 1946.At nineteen years old he meets Yves Klein (who died prematurely in 1962) and Claude Pascal, who will become his closest friends. Is the beginning of exciting youth. His interest in philosophy and Eastern art carries him to the Ecole du Louvre in Paris in 1949.Avoiding the plans of his father who wanted Armand to become an auctionier, he returns to Nice and leaves for Madrid where he teaches at the Bushido Kwaj Judo School.He returns to Nice in 1951 where his desire to paint becomes strong under the influence of Serge Poliakoff and Nicholas Stael. He decides, like Vincent Van Gogh, to sign with his first name: Armand.In 1953 he starts what will be a twenty years marriage with Eliane Radigue. Toghether they have three children: Françoise, Anne and Yves (who died in an accident in 1989). From another marriage in 1971 whit Corice Canton he has two other children, Yasmine and Philippe.Inspired by the works of Kurt Schwitters and Jackson Pollock he applies the technique of sponge painting and shows his first “Cachets” in Paris in 1956.In 1958, during a show by Iris Clert, Armand makes official a printing error on the invitations (Armand was written without D) and changes his signature to Arman.In 1959 Arman’s career takes a new turn with the introduction of “Accumulation of objects”.In 1960 Arman becomes a founding member of an art group: the Nouveaux Realistes, under the guidance of Pierre Restany.1961 Arman’s first show in New York: he makes use of new materials: polyester and plexiglass.While his works and exhibitions continue to grow, Arman is already involved in the intellectual and artistic movement of the 1960’s. Thanks to his life style, he becomes a part of the New York arts scene of the time, which is strongly influenced by Marcel Duchamp. During these years Arman lives in America but also travels to Europe to show his works.1962: metal cutting and collage, inclusion of polyester and combustion.1964-1965: personal retrospectives in Krefeld, Amsterdam, Bruxelles and Minneapolis.Since 1967 Arman sets off collaborations with industries (Art and Industry).At the beginning of 70’s, while his work is becoming more and more recognized in France and abroad, he is granted American citizen ship.Arman is now famous and shows also in Asia.In 80’s and 90’s his works and technics multiply. Arman works in series and discovers new methods of creation: “The day after” (bronze and combustion), painting-Brush Strokes, Dirty Paintings, Shootings Colors-the bronze serie, Atlantis…Monumental works take form: “Fairlaine Spirale” in Detroit, “Long Term Parking” in Jouyen-Josas, “A la Republique” at Eliseus Palace, “Consigne à Vie”, “L’heure de tous” at gare Saint Lazare, in Paris, “Omage to the Garment District” in Jerusalem, “Rostropovitch Tower” in California, “Espoir de Paix” in Beirut, “Matricelle” in Vire (Degrenne), “La Rampante” (homage to Ferrari) in Italy, “Toccata e Fuga” in Germany.At the end of the 90’s the works radically change into a succession of gestures referring to objects (Accumulation in Relation, Falling Objects, Sandwiches Combo). New interests for painting inspired; “La Nuit Etoilèe”, “Nec Mergitur”.At the same time Arman creates incision pieces and exaggerated size watercolors, drawings and reunites himself with his former collaborators of poetry and writing.1998-2001: from January to April 1998 takes place a “Retrospective of Arman” at National Gallery of Jeu de Paume in Paris. This show reunites more than one hundred works, realized between 1959 and 1997 wich highlight the more important moments of the body of the artist. The retrospective travels until 2001 throught out Germany, Portugal, Israel, brasil, Mexico, Tai Pei, Spain…in 2000 Arman works on Fragmentations on board and stacking project.A thematic retrospective is organized at Villeneuve Castle: “La Traversèe des Objects”.Arman is shown in international museums all over the world.There have been more than 500 personal shows, of wich 77 in museums.
